Closing the Gap wins two National Health Information Awards PDF Print E-mail
Closing The Gap in Healthcare Inc., a program established by MUSC alumnus and faculty member Thaddeus Bell, M.D., was the winner of a silver and bronze award in the 16th Annual National Health Information Awards. This program recognizes the nation’s best consumer health information programs and materials.

“I’m a Gonna” received a silver award for radio reporting. Those involved in the production and design are Bell, the Closing the Gap in Healthcare staff, and Citadel Broadcasting. Closing the Gap in Healthcare Inc. also received a bronze award for “Your Waistline.“ The public service announcements were featured in WMGL Magic 107.3 FM, WWWZ 93.3 FM and several Columbia area radio stations.

The award was the second time the Closing the Gap campaign was nationally recognized. The program was recognized by the Charleston County Medical Association in January and won a South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control best award for innovativeness in cultural literacy in health disparities in 2005.

“We are delighted to participate in the National Health Information Awards program and were honored to be selected as a winner,” said Bell, associate dean for minority affairs, College of Medicine and associate professor. “Our winning entries were chosen from more than 1,000 entries judged by a national panel of health information experts. While others focus specifically on research, Closing the Gap initiative values health literacy especially among African-Americans living in South Carolina.”

The awards program is coordinated by the Health Information Resource Center, a national clearinghouse for consumer health information programs and materials.
